Curry powder is a blend of different spices that are most frequently used in Indian Cuisine to add flavor and texture to the food. The combination of spices typically used in these types of products includes turmeric, cumin, coriander, and Chili Peppers.

However, there is some degree of variation in curry powders depending upon the particular manufacturer that you purchase the product from. Curry powders may also contain other spices such as fenugreek, ginger, and cinnamon.

The majority of curry powders are inherently gluten-free as the spices the blends are created do not contain any grains that have gluten in them.  However, it is important to double check the labels on the products as some manufacturers may also add wake flower fillers or thickeners which have the potential to contain gluten.

If you need additional information on how to follow gluten-free diet is always advisable to consult a healthcare professional or a dietician to ensure that you get personalized advice from them

How To Tell If Food Is Gluten Free

There is a couple of different ways in which you can determine if food is gluten-free:

  1. The most obvious of these is the look for gluten-free labels on the front of the packaging of the goods. If gluten-free labels are displayed in this manner it means that the manufacturer has tested the product for the presence of gluten.
  2. The second common method is to check the ingredient list. In most countries around the world manufacturers are required to declare the presence of any allergens which  includes gluten. Manufacturers will do this by either including the allergen information within the list of ingredients or placing a general statement at the bottom of the ingredients list stating me allergens that are present.

In the US the allergens that are required to be listed on the labels according to the food allergen and consumer protection ACT of 2004 are listed below;

  1. Milk
  2. Egg
  1. Fish
  2. Crustacean shellfish
  3. Tree nuts
  4. Peanuts
  5. Wheat
  6. Soybeans

However, there are a couple of exceptions to the labeling of foods that are important to note. The first is that many products contain glucose and dextrose which can be derived from corn or wheat. If they are derived from wheat the manufacturer will be required to declare the presence of wheat, however, due to the extent of processing any gluten that was present has been removed. So foods containing glucose and dextrose from wheat are safe for coeliacs to eat.

The other common practice is to place a statement at the bottom of the ingredients list that says this product may contain gluten in cases where the products are manufactured on equipment that is also used to manufacture gluten containing products.

These products are generally safe to eat for celiacs because the level of gluten that is likely to be transferred into the product is negligible.
