If you’ve ever had problems drying clothes in winter may be wondering if it is possible to speed up the drying process by using a microwave rather than using a conventional dryer.

You can’t use a microwave to dry clothes because it will heat up the clothes very rapidly but the clothes will not dry because the water does not have anywhere to escape to as microwaves are sealed for safety reasons. This means that what you will do is create a humid environment within your microwave with the article of clothing remaining very damp.

An example of this is shown in the video below which shows an experiment where someone tried to dry a sock in a microwave by placing it in the microwave for approximately 3 to 4 minutes which is long enough to heat most dishes off food. However, in the case of the sock, it remains hot but damp and wet.

Conventional clothes dryers work by providing hot dry air to clothes and allowing that air to be vented out of the machine taking the moisture with it. This gradually removes the moisture away from the clothing. But the nature of a microwave means that the moisture has nowhere to go and therefore will not dry no matter how much you heat them.

How Do You Dry Wet Clothes Quickly?

Typically if you’re asking this question it usually means you have a bit of a problem with drying clothes fast enough which most commonly happens in winter when the weather is poor and you simply cannot hang them outside on a clothesline.

If this is the case, definitely the quickest way to dry clothes but also the most expensive is to use a dryer. However, if you are interested in speeding up the drying of clothes then is important to reduce the number of clothes that go into the dryer at any one time as this will mean that the individual items within the machine will try much faster.

However, if you don’t want to spend the money on a dryer the next best option is just simply to use a clothes horse which you should ideally be placed in the warmest part of your house, and strategically it should be near heaters or central heating vents. As this will allow the warm air within the house to flow past the wet clothes quickly and easily.

When selecting the room in which you are going to dry clothes it is best to select the relative with a large room that is open to other rooms in the house. This is because drying clothes in a room will mean that it will create humidity so areas such as your bedroom which is usually an enclosed space that is smaller than the living areas are not the ideal place to put a clothes horse as this will result in new having mold on your windows and curtains due to the ongoing production of moisture.

How To Manage The Volume Of Washing In Your Household

In winter when there are lots of people in your household you will find that it is extremely difficult to keep up with the amount of washing that is required to ensure that everyone has clean clothes but there are a few strategies that will help to ensure that you keep on top of things.

The first thing is to use your clothes dryer strategically to dry items that will take a long time to dry on a clotheshorse because of their nature of them. Things like thick jumpers and towels will be extremely slow drying and they are also generally very large so they take up large amounts of space on your clothes horse.

To get rid of that bottle neck it is best to use the dryer to dry these items and dry a larger volume of smaller items quickly, such as t-shirts, underwear, and socks, on the clothes horse.

Additionally, it is important to ensure that you are washing clothes every couple of days as this will enable you to maximize the spaces on the clothes horse by constantly replacing the dry clothes with wet ones.

It is also a good idea to keep things like shirts off the clothes horse by hanging them on clothes hangers which can then be hooked onto pieces of furniture to dry which also will maximize the amount of space you have available to dry clothes.

This practice will also help to reduce the volume of folding and ironing that you need to do because the clothes are already on a hanger and can simply be added to your wardrobe once the drying process is complete.
